Since media coverage began in 2017, there has been significant progress in public attention towards commercial recycling of paper cups, despite paper cups initially being scapegoated as the root of all issues associated with disposable packaging.
Today, the environmental agenda surrounding disposable plastic products and single-use paper packaging has broadened, especially since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. Various industries are increasingly flooded with news about plastic bans, covering all types of packaging materials. Recycling, as the final step in the cycle, has placed “plastic” at the center of debates.

By 2024, Europe, including the UK, will have sufficient paper mill capacity to reprocess every paper coffee cup supplied to the market. The recipients of waste from the UK (and Europe), such as China, have imposed stringent restrictions on the waste they accept for recycling.
The political focus continues to move forward.
China, second only to India in terms of single-use paper packaging products (including paper cups), has seen both businesses and the government start to address the environmental and social impacts of non-degradable plastics. Reflecting the policies banning plastic products now being adopted across Europe and many countries worldwide, Chinese paper cup manufacturers are developing new environmentally friendly, biodegradable, and compostable products. These efforts aim to meet the regulatory measures imposed by local environmental authorities and customs on distributors and brand owners.
Get Bio Pak is a leader among all major industry groups and associations in China, advocating for national and regional governments to provide a consistent and unified approach to the necessary infrastructure. This infrastructure would facilitate the collection of used paper hot drink cups from consumers and ensure they are sent to facilities capable of recycling them.
